A hornet once made a nest at Lightwater Valley and it didn't seem too pleased with guests. It would spin you upside down, inside out, rock you, roll you, and turn your world upside down! This ride certainly had a sting in its tail!
Hornets Nest sat comfortably next to Eagles Claw and boy did it deserve such counterpart. As you were strapped in, you were sure to take a deep breath and prepare for a real jaw dropping experience.
The ride started off spinning round a few times in preparation for the 'big sting'. The huge circular ride body then lifted off the ground whilst still spinning and manoeuvred into position for a very disorientating experience.
Each individual gondola spun in relation with the position of the ride and weight dispersion of passengers – look up into the sky or down to the ground, you really didn't know when you were riding Hornets Nest! After many rotations and back flips and front flips, the ride came to a gradual stop.
Hornets Nest was an eye-catching shade of yellow, contrasting well with black panels. The nest was nicely finished off with a huge hornet centrepiece.
Overall the ride was fantastic experience and left you wondering how you ever survived the sting of Hornets Nest!
The ride was bought by the park in September 2006 from the then recently closed Pleasure Land in Southport. It was planned as the major new ride for the 2007 season but due to many technical difficulties the ride didn't open at all until March 2008. Unfortunately major issues continued to stricken the ride for both the 2008 and 2009 seasons, before management were left with no choice but to close the ride indefinitely.
Hornets Nest was a standard Chance Chaos ride. The two-person bucket seats flipped around freely, while attached to a main wheel with an electric variable speed drive, which varied in angle hydraulically.
