A hornet has made its nest at Lightwater Valley and doesn’t seem too pleased with guests. It will spin you upside down, inside out, you rock, you roll, and you whirl! This ride certainly has a sting in its tail!
Hornets Nest sits comfortably next to Eagles Claw and boy does it deserve such counterpart. As you are strapped in, take a deep breath and prepare for a real jaw dropping experience.
The ride starts off spinning round a few times in preparation for the 'big sting'. The huge circular ride body then lifts off the ground whilst still spinning and manoeuvres into an angle and the ‘three dimensional’ experience begins.
Each individual gondola spins in relationship with the position of the ride and weight dispersion of passengers – look up into the sky or down to the ground, you really don’t know when you’re riding Hornets Nest! After many rotations and back flips and front flips, the ride comes to a gradual stop.
Hornets Nest is an eye-catching shade of yellow, contrasting well with black panels. The nest is nicely finished off with a huge hornet centrepiece.
Overall the ride is fantastic experience that will leave you wondering how you ever survived the sting of the Hornets Nest!
The ride was bought by the park in September 2006 from the then recently closed Pleasure Land in Southport. It was planned as the major new ride for the 2007 season but due to many technical difficulties the ride didn't open at all until March 2008.
Hornets Nest is a standard Chance Chaos ride despite being slightly modified to fit the parks theming. The two-person bucket seats flip around freely, while attached to a main wheel with an electric variable speed drive, which varies in angle hydraulically.
